Abstract

The speakers on the Twitter menfess account @suroboyofess are people from Surabaya City and its surrounding areas. The Javanese dialect Arek is the main language used in their communication. The presence of followers from outside the region causes the usage of various languages. This research aims to describe the types of code switching and the underlying factors, as well as the forms of code mixing and their underlying factors. Code switching on the Twitter menfess account @suroboyofess was found to occur in the following ways: from Javanese to Indonesian, from Indonesian to Javanese, from Javanese Ngoko to Javanese Krama, and from English to Indonesian, as well as from Indonesian to English. The factors behind code-switching are: (1) adapting the language used to the conversation partner; (2) the presence of a third, fourth, or even fifth person; (3) the speech context and topic of discussion. Code mixing on the Twitter menfess account @suroboyofess takes the following forms: (1) mixing individual words; (2) phrases; (3) repeated words; and (4) idioms. The insertion of Indonesian words into Javanese speech occurs due to the speakers' habit of daily communication. The use of English words in Javanese is mostly because those insertions are popular terms commonly used in social media.
