THE EFFECT OF FIBERGLASS LAYER VARIATIONS ON TENSILE STRENGTH OF COMPOSITE POLYESTER-COFFEE GROUND
Abstract
The development of polymer composites in the modern era is very rapid, one of which is coffee grounds composites. Coffee is one of the wastes whose handling is very minimal but has many advantages such as easy to find, has odor absorbing properties, and is easy to recycle. Addition of glass fiber to coffee ground composites to add characteristic values to the composite. The method used is a press hand layup with a matrix volume of 60% unsaturated polyester and coffee pulp 40% with variations in glass fiber 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 layers. Testing of tensile strength with reference to ASTM D 3039 shows the results of the largest tensile strength in a 4 layer variation of 38MPa while the lowest tensile strength is at layer 0 of 13 MPa. From the data obtained that the addition of glass fiber to coffee pulp composites can increase the tensile strength of the composite.
